10 Ways to boost AOV without adding adding traffic
and why that’s better for your bottom line
AOV (Average Order Value) isn’t just a metric: It’s your growth engine. While everyone’s chasing traffic, smart ecommerce teams focus on making each visit more valuable.
Here are 3 strategies I use with ecommerce clients inside BTNG Unlimited that deliver outsized returns:

1. Free Shipping Thresholds
Free shipping isn’t a perk, it’s an expectation. But instead of offering it outright, use it as leverage. Set the threshold about 30% above your current AOV, and you’ll nudge customers to add more to their cart without feeling like you’re upselling them.
Just make sure it’s obvious. A progress bar at checkout or a gentle reminder in the cart goes a long way.

2. Product Bundles
Bundling is a classic move because it works. When you group complementary products (especially with a small discount) it removes friction, boosts perceived value, and moves more inventory.
Think curated sets, mix-and-match kits, or seasonal collections. The key is making it easy for the customer to say yes.

3. Smart Upsells & Cross-Sells
These tactics can feel pushy, unless they’re done right. The trick is context and timing. If someone’s buying a new phone, suggest a case and screen protector. Not socks.
Use what you know about the customer to surface relevant upgrades or accessories that genuinely improve their purchase. It’s a win for them and a win for your AOV.
